Peter is a fourth generation Irish-Australian with a passion for Irish
and Irish-Australian history and culture.

With publications in local and legal history under his belt, he studied
postgraduate Australian History at University College Dublin, with
special attention to the Irish impact on colonising efforts in early
New Zealand and South Australia. Back in Australia, he qualified as an
archivist and worked for three years at the Australian National
University and afterwards as a consultant.

Peter researches and writes Irish Australian history, is a regular
presenter at conferences and seminars, and reads and publishes other
peoples’ work in the same field. He is the managing editor of Crossing Press, a
specialist publisher of books of Irish and Australian history founded
in 1992. The Press's titles range across the field of Irish and
Irish-Australian studies. For a time, we distributed History Ireland
magazine and imported numerous Irish book titles, and hav sponsored regional seminars on the impact of the 1798 Rebellion on western Sydney and managed the ‘Ireland 1798 Australia’ Research
Project and Database.

For fifteen years Peter has taught Irish History at adult education
centres in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. In 1994 he arranged and
guided ten people around Ireland over 20 days and since then has taken
numerous specialist tours for one to 27 travellers.

From his home in the Blue Mountains he mixes bush walking with work on
Irish emigration to Australia and an Irishman's biography, as well as the
history of Australian lawyers.
